prosthesis? Advice please...

I'm 30. Had surgery last year to remove a lump on my right testicle. At the time I was offered a prosthesis but decided against it. Have been thinking about it more recently since splitting up with my girlfriend  and wanted to know what other people think about them? Are people pleased they had a prosthesis now?

Hi Beany. I had a testicle removed nearly 6 years ago and have never missed it. Everything works fine down below, As to being differant its had the opposite effect and possibly made me more confidant such as being proud of only having one. My freinds nicknamed me womble (oneball). This often raises the question "why" to strangers, and because I don't mind descussing it, this seems to break the ice nicely and have made some nice freinds where as before Ive been a little shy. Best of luck to you in the future, I'm sure you will find your own path as we are all so differant.

Wholeheartedly agree that whilst the experience of having to have a testicle removed because of TC the choice of having a testicle implant is a very personal one. I would have opted to have an implant at the same time as the removal but was advised that this would not be possible due to chemotherapy afterwards. I am due to have my new testicle "fitted" in June and to be honest it can't come soon enough for me. I have found that every morning the shower routine is a constant reminder that things are not as they used to be, this, together with the fact I work as a Nude Life Model is the reason that I have opted to have the implant op carried out. I have continued with the life modelling even though I only have a half  filled scrotum mainly as an act of defiance against the cancer, however being nude with my "parts" on public display 4 - 5 times per week, I feel sure that I will feel more comfortable having two balls rather than just the one.

Would like to hear from anyone who has got an implant and how they feel about it.

Cheers, Scarr

Hi, my husband had TC two years ago and chose not to have an implant. He felt he'd been through enough and is quite happy just having 'one'. He said it felt 'odd' at first but now i don't think it bothers him, he never says it does. From a female point of view it doesn't bother me at all i'm just so relieved it was diagnosed early and he is now well. On the whole i doubt any caring women would focus that much, if at all on whether there are two down there or one! It's never bothered me. However i'm not a chap and everyone is individual so good luck whatever your pathway.

Hi,

It's been about three weeks since my first post on the subject of testicle prosthetic implants. I would very much like to hear from any man who has opted to have implant surgery and there thoughts on the end results i.e. size matching, positioning within the scrotum etc.

Thanks in advance for any input on this subject,  Rgds, Scarr

Hi Scarr,

I was diagnosed with testicular cancer a couple of years ago now. I had  a prosthesis put in at the time of my surgery. Its been fine although I remember at the time having an infection which I think was because I had it done at the same time as my orignial surgery. It took a while to settle down. As you would expect it doesn't feel the same as my other one and it hangs a bit higher too. The size is fine and I'm happy with it. Hope your operation goes well!

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your response regarding your testicle implant experience. A question if you don't mind, was/is your implant sutured into place and if so has it caused you any problems? As having done a bit of research on the subject (not easy) quite a few men have commented on this and would rather it had not been sutured into place within the scrotum. Any comments would be welcomed. Sorry to hear that you, like me, have been through the TC challenge and trust that two years down the line you are well and life has returned, as much as possible, to normal.

Best Regards, scarr

Happy to help! Yes my prosthesis was sutured into place and apart from the infection I can honestly say I've had no problems with it at all. You are right two years down the line life has moved on and although I'm still a bit anxious prior to my appointments (even now) I don't think about it all the time. I think once you have finished all the treatment you require then its more managable. I'm at the point now where I don't think about it everyday. Hope all goes well for you!

Beany,

I've got prosthesis which was inserted during the removal operation. mine isn't sutured which can make for some interesting positioning! mines too small however, and doesn't hang correctly in the scrotom, tends to ride up when im stood up but to be honest its not noticable. i can easily pass it off as just a 'naturally' smaller ball.

anything else you'd like to know i'd be more than happy to tell.

Hi Russell, Thanks for adding you post on the subject of testicle prosthesis. In you experience do you think that you prosthesis sits high in the scrotum because it wasn't sutured into place or do you feel that it is a size issue with not enough weight to keep it lower down within the scrotum? I'm due to get a prosthesis fitted in the near future and would like it to look as natural as possible. Any comments on the subjects of suturing/not suturing and size matching would be most welcomed.

Cheers, Stephen (scarr)

Stephen,

I'm not sure to be honest, i would think that if the size was larger it would actualy sit further down but obviously im just guessing. If you had it sutured then it would definatly sit correctly, right? I mean mine isn't freakishly strange or anything :) when asked ive told people its just my smaller testical and they've taken it at face value.

Maybe worth speaking to the surgeon about weight etc? I think the best option would be to have it sutured though.

Question for Jim & Beany and also any one who has a testicle prosthesis.

I have recently had a testicle prosthesis fitted and although I am happy with the sizing the location within the scrotum seems strangely high and is close to my body at all times i.e. it doesn't "dangle/hang" at all. At the lowest point of the prosthesis it is about 2cm above the uppermost point of my remaining natural testicle. I was advised pre-opp that the prosthesis would sit slightly higher than the remaining natural testicle but to be honest, I was not prepared for such a strange appearance with one on top of the other and lots of scrotal skin flapping about under the prosthesis where my original natural testicle used to sit. I can also feel it pulling against the scrotal suturing all the time. Is this normal or does it take a while to settle down and hang lower? although I don't see how it can as the suturing is high up on the wall of the scortum. Not having ever seen another scrotum with a prosthesis fitted, I don't know if what I have ended up with is normal or not, all I know is that it is not exactly or even nearly natural looking.

Any comments much appreciated. rgds. Stephen

Thanks for all the information about the prosthesis. After reading about your experiences and thinking about it abit more I actually decided not to go ahead with having a prosthetic inplant.

I'm really sorry Stephen that you are not happy with the result and obviously can't advise you one way or another having not having this experience myself- may be talking to the surgeon would be the way forward? At least then you'll know if it is likely to improve.

All the best and once again thanks to you all for some sound advice.

Hi Stephen

Sorry to hear you aren't happy with your op. My experience was a bit different as I had it done at the time of my surgery and ended up with an infection- very uncomfortable at the time so not sure what was to do with the infection and what was general discomfort. The prosthesis does hang higher (but then I wasn't symmetrical before!). I also have to say it hasn't ever changed position either. I don't really pay much attention to it now and you get use to it- it does feel different like you say but hopefully that will settle down too.

I agree with Beany, that if you are really unhappy with the surgery maybe go back and chat to the surgeon again- but I suspect they will need to operate to alter that? Not sure, sorry.

I do think it takes time to get use to so you may feel differently in a few weeks.

Not sure if thats helpful- but if you have any other questions just ask.

Jim
